Quite a find in Darlinghurst, the Altamont features smart-looking, modern rooms with en suites and an easy-going, convivial vibe. Well-priced, beautifully designed interiors feature stark mod detailing and custom-made Indonesian furniture, breaking up any uniformity in this restored 1830s homestead.Altamont flagged the end of 60s peace and love, but here in Darlinghurst the good times continue unabated. Spiffy-looking en suite doubles feel like they should cost more than they do, while staff and communal areas - filled with fat leather sofas and a pool table - are welcoming (especially the terrace). It's also tantalisingly close to Kings Cross - party time! The Altamont is the sort of hotel that snags in your memory because it offers an alternative to the usual experience, and only just creeps into mid-range territory by a few dollars for deluxe rooms (which drop to budget prices for stays of a week or more). Bathrooms are spacious and look as though they belong in a four-star joint; some rooms have access to small courtyards. A couple of black hell-hounds may or may not be malingering in the lobby.

Head along Darlinghurst Rd into the red-light frenzy of Kings Cross after dark. Strip joints and backpacker hostels bang heads with classy restaurants and funky bars as 'The Cross' pumps 24/7. A weird cross-section of society is drawn to the lights: buskers, beggars, tourists, prostitutes, pimps, groomed metrosexuals, businessmen and underfed artists roam the streets on equal footing.
The hotel takes its name from the notorious 1969 Altamont Speedway concert played by the Rolling Stones. Apparently the Stones used to visit the former Cauldron nightclub on these premises.
