Set in park-like grounds just south of Bloor St W, the Victoria University residences open their doors to budget-minded tourists from early May until late August. Rooms come with single or twin beds and are equipped with linen and towels.Victoria University is a real find: not only is it located smack dab in the middle of Toronto, but with its surrounding foliage, it's well insulated from the din of downtown traffic. Full complimentary breakfast is served in the old-world dining hall; bagged/hot lunches and dinners are available for less than 10.00 each. Local phone calls are free and laundry facilities are found inside the building. Guests have access to a fitness centre with a vast Olympic-sized pool and tennis courts. Bathrooms are shared, but kept very clean. One night's deposit is required in advance as rooms fill up quickly. At rates like these, it's understandable. Ask about further reductions for students and seniors (usually $7 off). Single travellers may want to take advantage of the cheap monthly rates.

There are plenty of things to do right on campus, including picnicking in Queen's Park or viewing contemporary paintings in the UT Art Centre. Free walking tours of the historic St George campus are a great way to learn more about the history of the school.
