A secret hideout for artists and indie musicians, the Drake Hotel has a sophisticated flavour and a cool nightclub. Located in Toronto's arty design neighbourhood, where galleries, fashion boutiques and interior design shops abound, guest rooms borrow from the surroundings.

Artful rooms exploit vintage furniture and jazzed-up throw rugs. Technology has not been overlooked; you'll find DVD and CD players, plasma screen TVs and high-speed Internet access. Try the 'crash pad' with its exposed brick walls and cool artwork, or the suite with the funky wallpaper and green leather sitting area. Bathrooms feature glass cubicle showers, while rooms focus on local arts and crafts. You may even find a handcrafted doll keeping your bed warm for you. Be forewarned about the noise generated by the hotel's underground club, which is compensated for by free earplugs at the front desk. Hang out in the lounge (11:30-02:30) for some industrial strength people-watching from the massive floor to ceiling windows. If Monday, catch an open mic night and a free buffet.
