Base Backpackers is part of the flashpacker movement of hostels that aims to make the hostel experience as funky and fresh as possible. Their Auckland branch is a bustling, well-run entity spread out over numerous levels, with hundreds of beds and an endless supply of hormones.
The staff at reception are capable, but give the impression that they're a bit tired of the endless army of thrill-seekers. If you're with them (the staff) and you're female, then book a bed in the Sanctuary - the aptly named all-women dorm that takes up an entire floor of the building. Dorm rooms throughout are fairly cramped but are in good working order. Double and twin rooms, either with or without bathroom, are also tight-cornered - don't expect to stretch out here. It's a smart-looking hostel overall, with lots of charcoal grey and rust red paint, good industrial-strength carpet and a spa/sauna.
