By day the joys of the Mall and other classic sights are within a 20-minute walk. At night things are a bit bleaker but the Metro will take you to hipper parts of town and a cab ride back won't cost more than a couple of pints.

How to get there

• Airports Ronald Reagan Airport Take Metro train (blue line) to Metro Center, walk 3 blocks north on 11th Street. A taxi will cost you about $12-15 Dulles International Airport Take Washington Flyer bus to West Falls Church terminal ($8), take Metro train (orange line) to Metro Center and walk 3 blocks north on 11th Street. A taxi will cost you about $40-45 Baltimore Washington International (BWI) Airport At the International Pier, catch the B-30 Metro bus (costs $2.20), which will take you to the Greenbelt Metro Station. From there, take the Green Line train to Fort Totten and transfer from the Green to the Red Line. Take the Red Line train to Metro Center and when you exit the station to 11th Street, walk three blocks north to 11th and K Street. The Super shuttle van is a way to get directly to the hostel (costs $30.00). The M.A.R.C. train from the Baltimore Train Station (costs under $10.00).
