Duke's brings a touch of Las Vegas to suburban Auckland's Vagus Place thanks to its rather eye-catching swimming pool, which takes the shape of a guitar. There's no reason for it to exist either, as Duke's is, in every other respect, a run-of-the-mill motor lodge. The story of the pool goes back to the lodge's previous owner, who went by the nickname Duke and wanted to make his gaff stand out. He certainly succeeded, although if you visit the website you might be led to believe that the pool is larger than it actually is. Rooms are comfortable, with OK beds, cable TV and decent bathrooms, while the quiet location (off busy Pah Rd) means you'll sleep soundly. If you need space, book a unit, which comes complete with kitchenette and room to stretch out (unlike the standard double/twin rooms, which can feel a little 'close'). Staff are very friendly and helpful, and happy to share stories about the history of the place.
