You'd be hard pressed to find a more tranquil setting than these charming studio apartments in Kato Zakros. Perched on a verdant, pine-tinged rise above the site of the Palace of Zakros, with a view over the treetops to the beach, this is a great place to really relax.Reached by a steep 7km (4.3mi) winding road from Zakros village, in far eastern Crete, the beach hamlet of Kato Zakros is a peaceful place to spend a few days. Its remote location next the site of the Minoan Palace of Zakros has thankfully limited development to a few rooms and tavernas at one end of the pebble beach. These three, comfortable stone-built studios are a short walk above the beach, set amongst pine trees and a garden lovingly maintained by owners Stella and Elias. They are decorated with traditional furnishings, old farming utensils, assorted collectables and wooden furniture made by Elias. They have well-equipped kitchens, as well as barbecues. The shaded hammocks are ideal for an afternoon siesta or to ponder which taverna to dine at. Stella and Elias are keen trekkers and take guests on walks in the area, including the Zakros Gorge.

If you don't want to laze on the beach all day you can explore the ruins of the nearby Minoan Palace of Zakros. Another option is to get a lift back up towards the outskirts of the village where you can tackle the two-hour walk down the spectacular Zakros Gorge, which spills out near the beach.
The Zakros Gorge is known as the Valley of the Dead because ancient burial sites are located in the numerous caves dotting the canyon walls.
