This is the best choice for budget travelers unwilling to brave the perils of the center. It's a bit removed from Altamira's focal point, the Plaza de Francia, but that just means there's less traffic noise to deal with. For sheer value, the Altamira compares favorably with its neighbors closer to the plaza. Its rooms are also bigger and better-maintained than many. Designed for comfort, they feature a pleasing combination of wicker furniture, freshly whitewashed walls and clean tiled floors. The air-con's nice and cool, and a pair of new elevators ensure you'll never have to wait more than a minute to be beamed up. A most cordial reception staff speak a bit of English for Spanish-impaired guests. At eight storys, the Altamira is dwarfed by the nearby Britannica monolith, but takes full advantage of its modest height by equipping all rooms with balconies. Front-facing rooms may not have picture-perfect views, but do give an interesting angle on the city looking over a small, haphazardly built barrio (shantytown) to the skyscrapers and mountain beyond.

Wander around La Estancia, two blocks east, the sprawling ex-coffee hacienda with an art museum and weekend concerts in the patio. Later on, join the locals for an early evening stroll around the Plaza de Francia. For dinner, choose from the numerous fine restaurants in nearby La Castellana. Round off the evening with some rock 'n' roll at La Cigarra club, within stumbling distance of the hotel.
