Functional rooms in a purpose-built hotel next to Albert Dock - this French budget motel (or as close as you'll get to a motel in Liverpool) belongs to the Taittinger family, better known as the world-famous champagne dynasty. It's in a great location and is perfect for families - children under 12 stay for free. The Campanile isn't quite as sophisticated as Champagne Taittinger, the staff aren't especially bubbly and the experience of staying here won't leave you dizzy with delight, but the advantages of staying so close to Albert Dock for so little should outweigh other considerations. The rooms are small but perfectly adequate, with comfortable beds, inoffensive decor and clean, compact bathrooms. Some guests have complained that the thin walls are a serious encroachment on privacy and a tranquil sleep (a compact hotel that is popular with families does not always make for uninterrupted z's).

Albert Dock is on the doorstep, but make sure you don't miss out on Liverpool itself - the best bits of the city are inland, away from the water, including the best restaurants and nightlife (although Babycream on Albert Dock is a pretty swanky spot for both a drink and some food). That is, of course, if the thought of beating the dealer doesn't drag you into Leo's Casino next door to the hotel.
