A cracking three-star in a prime location, Teatropace 33 is a real find. Housed in a 17th-century cardinal's residence near Piazza Navona, it offers 23 tasteful, timber-beamed rooms spread over four floors. There's no lift, just a monumental stone staircase - a sight in itself. Friendly staff add to the charm.

The star of the show is undoubtedly the baroque, peach-coloured staircase which winds its imperious way up to the elegant, high-ceilinged rooms. These have been decked out with stylish restraint - think parquet floors, damask curtains, and polished wood furniture. En-suite bathrooms are clad in gleaming mottled-marble. Thick 17th-century walls ensure a good night's sleep, something that is not always guaranteed in Rome's buzzing centre. If sleep is not on your agenda, you don't have to go far to find the action - Piazza Navona is nearby, the Pantheon is a short walk away, and there are any number of pizzerie and wine bars on your doorstep. Hotel extras include a kettle in each room, air-con, and an internet point.
