It was worth the wait: Brussels finally boasts a cool, grown-up independent and - best of all - epicentral hostel. Brothers Pascal, Xavier and Vincent Dewilde spent months turning this tobacco-coloured building into a hi-tech travellers' hang-out in the city's heart, while preserving its substantial history.Variously home to Brussels newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws (The Latest News), and the Belgian VLD centre-right political party, this 19th-century mansion is again making headlines as the home of the city's latest and, for our money, greatest new hostel. Designer touches like a mirror ball in reception, groovy orange plastic light fittings and tea-light candles give these sleek digs a retro ambience; while four- to eight-bed, mostly ensuite dorms painted in striking colours are spacious and well-ventilated thanks to the building's soaring ceilings. There's also a handful of intimate private rooms. Extras include free Internet terminals, hostel-wide wi-fi, state-of-the-art flat-screen TVs and speakers, and a snazzy self-catering kitchen. There's no breakfast but there's a bakery right across the street; and the staff lay on free tea, coffee and hot chocolate to kick-start the day.

Supermarkets, cinemas, pharmacies and the bustling city centre are all just a few footsteps from the hostel. For a true taste of Brussels, head to Le Corbeau (Rue St-Michel 18) for stoemp - a typical local dish made of mashed potatoes, carrots and other vegetables, with a sausage on top. And for the best of Brussels' ubiquitous mussels, you can't go past Chez Léon (Rue des Bouchers 18).
