In one of Bordeaux' beautiful old 18th-century mansions, this link in the Amarys chain is a decent midrange option just a few paces from the Gare St-Jean train station.

Typical of the building's era, there's an elegant Bordelaise stone staircase, but fortunately there's also a lift. The decor takes a stab at Santa Fe with adobe-style ochre walls and colourful fabrics which help brighten the otherwise smallish, dark rooms with frosted glass windows (they can be opened, though many look onto blank facades). You'll find all the basics in the hotel's 37 air-conditioned rooms, like telephones, TVs, mini bars and wi-fi access, as well as compact bathrooms. A clutch of tables adjoining the reception area comprise the hotel bar, serving a pared-down selection of cocktails, whiskies and the local vintage.
