The Cairns Central wing of this daddy of all hostel chains is set in a refurbished, two-storey motel. Parked behind a secure gate, the bland brick skeleton has been prettied up with a pastel hue of sunflower yellow, and conventional rooms with steel-tube bunks come in primary colours.

Rooms occupy a U-shaped block surrounding a central pool and BBQ area, densely populated with shady palms and baking backpackers. Dorms come in four-, six- and nine-bed configurations and all are clinically spotless. Bargain doubles contain just enough room for a double bed and a couple of backpacks or you can step up in style and space and pay a little extra for an en suite. Either way, if you're in need of a bout of privacy it pays to book well in advance; this budget bonanza caters not only to hostel junkies at both the GAP and retired end, but families and budget groups as well. The broad spectrum brews a chipper ambience, complimented nicely by professional management and good facilities.
