Heading to the mountains of Crete needn't mean roughing it, nor missing out on the beach. These upscale cottages near the village of Zaros in central Crete are surrounded by olive groves and framed by a dramatic mountain backdrop.

They are terraced along the hillside overlooking a verdant valley - the higher the hike to the rooms, the more stunning the view. Eleonas is part of the new breed of EU-funded Agrotourism projects offering alternative, year-round tourism. The furnishing is faux traditional but the 10 smartly appointed apartments have all the mod cons including satellite TV, DVD players and basic cooking facilities. Beds are upstairs in the loft, with living areas downstairs, and there is one wheelchair-friendly two-room apartment. There are fireplaces for romantic winter stays. Horse riding, archery, mountain bikes and guided walking tours are on offer and guests can also participate in agricultural activities. Despite the altitude, it can be very hot in summer and the rooms would benefit from insect screens. The taverna and cafe enjoy a serene setting. A swimming pool is in the pipeline.
