This extravagant 17th century townhouse is far and away the best hotel in Penzance. The elegant sky-blue mansion still retains much of its gentlemanly atmosphere and period features, including an oak-panelled dining room, a secluded walled garden and a warren of creaky wood-floored corridors.

The hotel is nestled on a quiet alleyway off Chapel St, a handsome thoroughfare once home to the town's wealthiest merchants, traders and sea-captains. Owned and run by a husband-and-wife team, the Abbey is one of those delightfully old-fashioned hotels that sets out to create a real home away from home. The antiquated rooms are stuffed with mismatched furniture and vintage rugs, and are all decorated in their own individual style; some feature heritage wallpaper, antique headboards and burnished furniture, while others are decorated in sea blues, floral prints and sunny yellows. All rooms are ensuite, although Room 7 has a private bathroom across the hallway, and Room 4 has a tiny shower room squeezed into a converted cupboard. Guests are also free to make use of the lovely drawing room, complete with crackling fire and book-lined shelves.
