Facing off with the Opera House (but losing rather badly in the race for architectural grace), the curvaceous, low-slung Park Hyatt is super-luxurious and super-located. Rooms boast marble baths, there's a gym, rooftop pool and spa and - if your socks need darning at 04:00 - a 24-hour butler service. Absolute opulence.

The Park Hyatt is arguably Sydney's best deluxe hotel, and manages to avoid the cookie-cutter chain-hotel pitfalls by sheer weight of location. I mean, really, eyeballing the Opera House across Circular Quay from your suite is an absurdly delicious prospect. Great on-site bars and restaurants add to the lure, as do the harbour ripples splashing beneath the boardwalk out the front. There's also the possibility of swimming laps next to George Clooney in the rooftop pool (will he have time to join you in the spa?). And yes, it's a squat and fairly ugly building, but at least you don't have to ride endless elevators and escalators to get around inside - you can walk!
