A perennial favourite of budget travellers, this guesthouse consists of a hodgepodge of rooms, some of them enormous, that branch off a long hall cluttered with art and objets d'art - all within a marvellous, 17th-century palazzo. While Forster's characters stayed in rather more upmarket digs, this place feels like the apartment they might have inhabited had they decided to settle in Florence permanently. The engaging and proudly Welsh Evelyn Morris says she has been renting rooms to travellers for 'decades'. She keeps a curfew of 23:00 but makes exceptions for special occasions. The apartment is located at the top of two flights of the palazzo's imposing stone staircase, but once you enter, it's all Anglo cosiness. Rooms, mostly quite large by Florentine standards, are old-fashioned but spotless, and the price includes a simple breakfast of prepared cakes and coffee served in bed. The rates and location right between the Duomo and the Piazza della Signoria are tough to beat, but the real draw here is the charming and welcoming Morris. Do pack earplugs if you are a light sleeper - this is a high-decibel neighbourhood, thanks mostly to screaming motorbikes.
