Lonely Planet Review
If you don't mind using the robe and slippers provided to tip-toe down the halls to a shared WC, the Larchmont offers a leafy residential downtown locale for super cheap. There's only the small lobby for lounging about, but there's so much life in the area that anytime's fine to go out for a drink.
Between New York University and the New School on a relatively quiet block, the six-floor red-brick Larchmont welcomes many visiting parents of students among its international crowd of travelers. All its 60 quickly filled rooms are carpeted and have simple wicker furnishings, high-speed internet connections, cable TV, a wall-unit air-conditioner, a small writing desk, and a small sink. Down the hall - past old animal prints - are a couple of shared compact bathrooms with a tub and toilet (there's one per five rooms) and a communal kitchen (no utensils though). Rooms with queen beds face the street, getting some townhouse views; plus these also have flat-screen TVs.

Author Tip
Away from the hordes of Greenwich Village's crooked lanes, and at a walkable distance to SoHo, Washington Park and the East Village, the Larchmont is great for visitors keen to walk New York who are not looking for the plushest comfort.
