Occupying two buildings separated by a busy road and the U-Bahn tracks (which run above ground here), Meininger is part of the new generation of Berlin hostels offering modern rooms and a comfort level rivalling basic hotels. It has lots of great features (linen and lockers), but those looking for a party vibe are probably better off elsewhere.

Staff are in charge of over 500 beds between the two properties, which draw everyone from backpackers to groups of pimply-faced teenagers to cost-conscious couples. Whether by virtue or necessity, they run a pretty tight ship, which translates into efficient service and a high standard of cleanliness but also a comparatively institutional feel. All rooms have their own en suite private shower and toilet, TV, good lighting and a table and chairs. We also like the range of freebies, which includes linen, towels, lockers, parking and an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet served in a bright room with panoramic city views on the 7th floor. In fine weather, lug your coffee and cornflakes out to the rooftop terrace. The small kitchen, a hostel guest only bar and a snack stand selling sausage, meat patties and other German 'soul food' are other pleasant perks.
