Lonely Planet review

OK, so the prices are a little outrageous for a hostel. But oh, what a hostel - amenities galore, super-clean dorm rooms, 500 beds... Opened in the Loop in 2000, this bright and cheery place is Chicago's best bunk-bed lodging.Kick back in the giant common room with free wi-fi, ping-pong table, tons of sofas and chairs - and a concierge. Sign up for daily field-trips to interesting neighborhoods, bar-hopping or sight-seeing. There's also a computer room with 10 terminals for rent. In the morning, toast, cereal and pastries await in the ginormous dining room and kitchen. Throughout, a clean, dorm-like feel pervades. That's probably because the hostel does double duty as Columbia College housing during the academic year. The number of available beds drops from 500 to 250 from September to May, but it's usually not a problem to get a space. The simple, immaculate rooms have six to 12 beds and attached bathrooms; men and women are in separate quarters. There is no curfew; check-in starts after 15:00. Linen and towels are free, and blissful air-conditioning lets loose when summer temperatures rise.
