Lonely Planet Review
The first guesthouse in Essaouira, Villa Maroc opened its doors in 1990. It was established by a surfing enthusiast for his surf-buddy friends and much of that careless, imperfect charm remains, despite the Maroc having morphed into one of the biggest and trendiest riads (traditional house hotel) in the medina.
The villa is actually four interconnecting houses with patios and winding staircases in a haphazard, polyethnic style. It's true the rooms are wildly different in size and decor. Room number 5 is poky, awkward and overpriced, while others such as the terrace suites have fabulous views and eye-catching furnishings. It has a tip-top location, a lovely oriental spa, a highly regarded restaurant and experienced staff to help with planning a multitude of excursions. In the evening the house really comes into its own - a delicious intimacy descends. Lounging fireside with a glass of red wine in hand, it's hard to see the faults.

Author Tip
With its portside location, getting out to the beach is a no-brainer. Take some windsurfing lessons at L'Ocean Vagabond right down the bottom of the beach. Then hang out with the who's who of Essaouira at Taros Cafe before heading home for a steamy hammam (steam bath) treatment and massage.
