Like your artiest friend, the Lloyd is always fabulous and occasionally exasperating. More than just a hotel, it's also a cultural centre and local gathering place, so you never know what's around the next corner - even in your room. It has a range of rooms from barren to lavish. The building began life as a hotel for migrants, and many of its original fixtures still exist. Its 116 rooms are classed from one- to five-star. Each has a unique design, from glorious original tilework to eastern European antiques, moulded furniture and soundproofing (for those impromptu studio sessions). The library boasts an intriguing collection of art books, the restaurant is minimalist and chic, and the shop sells everything you might need, including disposable nappies and cat food. Many of the rooms are as enigmatic as a work of art, so check first to see if yours might have a tub in the centre of the room, a bed that might sleep a cat or one so vast it sleeps eight.

The Eastern Docklands features some of the most cutting-edge architecture in Europe. There are some strikingly modern apartment blocks, but our favourite location is Scheepstimmermanstraat, where owners were given free reign to design their homes.
What a history! The Lloyd was built to give KHL shipping company an edge in transporting steerage passengers to the US. Emigrants could wait in relative comfort for their boat. In WWII the Nazis used it as a prison, a use that the government continued until 1989. Then it was used as artists spaces before being reborn as a hotel charging rates higher than the cost of a third-class boat trip to the US.
