Lonely Planet Review
The pride of Abdellatif's collection of Marrakech riads is the fiendishly popular Riad el Jazira. With 15 rooms organised around three courtyards it is full of comings and goings, but the minimalist aesthetic and understated grey-against-white decor create a cool and tranquil atmosphere.
In summer the large pool that takes up the entire back patio is wildly popular with children (note: no lifeguards here) and couples canoodling poolside. Lounging guests have it made in the shade of the adjacent patio, where light lunch is served on low tables. Families especially appreciate all this room to move around, and the three separate courtyards that help absorb the noise and afford some privacy - the riad is sometimes booked out in its entirety for family gatherings. For others, the remote location far from sights and shops and somewhat snooty service are major drawbacks. Rooms are simply furnished with futon-style beds topped by comfy mattresses and Berber wool blankets. Room 3 offers a great view over the pool through its grey moucharabieh (lattice-work) screens, but rooms around the other patios are quieter in summer.

Author Tip
The Nouvelle Ville and Djemaa el-Fna are far away, and this northern Medina location is mostly residential. Green tile-topped zaouias (saints' shrines) and mosques draw the faithful here; they're only open to Muslims, but they make a striking skyline.
Curious Fact
Abdellatif Ben Abdellah is the only Marrakchi to own such a collection of riads (courtyard mansion). He was one of the first entrepreneurs to start the work of renovating riads in the medina and viewed over 6000 of them before buying his first in 1990. He now owns five riad hotels under the aegis of Marrakech Riads.
