This rock-bottom-basic but well-run guesthouse has the big advantage of being a little away from the madness of Main Bazaar, yet still conveniently close to the action. Enjoying a far more peaceful setting than most other budget offerings in Paharganj, this down-to-earth place is a safe, if absolutely no-frills budget choice.

The Den has just 15 rooms, all with attached bathroom and hot water generated from an environmentally friendly solar-heating water system. The cheapest rooms are very bare but in fair shape, although some can be dark due to the absence of windows. If you can afford it, opt for the more expensive rooms as these are more spacious, have tiled floors and come with a small balcony. For even more access to the sunshine, there are two rooms on the rooftop that front a large open-air terrace. The Den's owner, a sprightly septuagenarian, is a retired Indian Army major who lives downstairs with his wife and daughter. He has a strict no drugs, no late-night visitors policy, so if you're not willing to stick to these rules, look elsewhere for a bed.
