This small, elegant five-star affair is strategically located for those who want to be near the centre of town while remaining free of its congested tangle of streets. From the liveried doorman to the original Second Empire furnishings, this is a classic Old World hotel.

Occupying a fine, late-19th-century palazzo, the hotel sits just across from the leafy Piazza Massimo d'Azeglio in a neighbourhood of wide sidewalks and spacious streets. That means when you step outside the hotel, you won't be mowed down by a tour group. Inside, the sitting room and library are done up with lavish red walls and various gilded appointments. Even more pleasant, they lead to a fine restaurant with seating around the hotel's small but elegant garden. Rooms - most of them large by Florentine standards - are swathed in rich silks yet also have every modern comfort, including wireless Internet access. One note: because of its small size, the hotel's staff, while solicitous, can sometimes be overwhelmed.
