Intimate (only 16 rooms) and furnished with flair, this stylish hotel, well-priced within its category, adds grace to an unfashionable part of town. Scarcely surprisingly, the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM), an easy walk away, regularly selects it as a venue for its guests.

'Chill Art' is this creative place's other name, and you soon see why. The lounge, with its fragmented white tiling, burning candles and cool background music sets the scene. The breakfast room, with its dark blue and white tiles, is equally light and airy. Bedrooms all have an original painting, illustrating fruit or flowers (the botanical gardens are just up the road). Each room has beechwood furnishings, a large glass-topped working table, tea/coffee making facilities, and free slippers that peep from under the bed (a tip: ask for their one-and-only suite, which comes at the same price). Clients receive preferential treatment at Neroli, a bijou of a spa centre barely 100m away and, for the adventurous, there's a replica vintage scooter for hire (45.00 per day) Weekend rates are especially good value.
