The rich have their far-out design hotels, so why can't the backpackers? Welcome to Ostinatto, feel free to throw your dirty pack on the slick white sofa. Occupying a converted century-old building, this deluxe hostel has five floors, 66 rooms and an ultra-modern interior.

Some rooms - particularly the private double rooms - are so small (and windowless) that you're guaranteed a good fit of hysteria if you're at all prone to claustrophobia. The communal kitchen, on the other hand, is huge and the giant Z-shaped white table makes for a rather sophisticated shared dining experience. From the lobby you can see five floors up, and the only thing impeding your view are the steel stairways that crisscross through the air from floor to floor. Walking across them will surely cure your vertigo. The entire interior is painted stark white and even the bathrooms are done up in modernist style. The only remnant of the original interior is the ancient iron elevator that climbs the five floors. The building itself is a handsome old timer tucked into an atmospheric block of historic houses.
