Lonely Planet review

This is one of the most welcoming hostels we encountered in Adelaide. It's set up in an attractive sandstone building with 140 years of history behind it, and the owners use its old timber character and stained glass to warm, friendly effect.

Colours have been splashed around to increase the abundant cheeriness, while a chandelier twinkles enigmatically in the hallway. Some rooms are bigger than others, with king-size beds rather than queens, and come with a bathtub - tick off your preferences when making inquiries via the helpful staff. There's also a three-bedroom cottage nearby that might be available and which you may have to yourself during quiet periods. Breakfast is included in the price and cheap dinners can be organised for consumption in the shady courtyard. It's opposite the Belly Dance Academy should you be tempted to learn some exotic new moves for forays down Hindley St.
