Greenhouse has a low-key, relaxed vibe and is extremely well-run - more like a hotel than a hostel. The location could hardly be better, close to Melbourne's laneways, cafes and pubs. The formula of chatty, helpful staff, spick-and-span facilities and loads of freebies and discounts make this hostel an excellent choice.

Uncluttered dorms and doubles come in a variety of sizes - dorms have four to six beds, firm mattresses and include lockers (bring a padlock). Freebies include breakfast, internet access, laptop storage, barbecues and pancake Sundays. The Thursday night pub crawls are another bonus. The large common area features a noticeboard with cars for sale and employment opportunities. Don't forget to hoof it up to the expansive rooftop terrace; you won't be blown away by the greenery but on balmy, beery Friday nights you're not likely to notice. Besides, the views of St Paul's Cathedral are fabulous.
