Lonely Planet review

Forget the fluffy pillows, baby-soft toilet roll and hints of fresh jasmine, the Kingsgate is a no-bullshit, inner-city hotel offering excellent value for money. You stay here for the central location, and because you don't believe in paying extortionate rates for lying in a horizontal position for eight hours.

The light and bright lobby, with its plush red tones, belies the simplicity of the hotel. The smallish rooms are straight up-and-down, have minimal views (unless you enjoy staring at walls and drainpipes), firm beds and are set in darkish corridors that have a slightly industrial feel. Rooms come with/without en suite and TV - if slightly claustrophobic it's well worth forking out the extra for an en suite room. You'll be comfortable here, but probably not the place to impress the new girl/boy friend. Squizzy's Bar-Cafe, on site, is a good place to chill if the walls in your room are starting to get closer.
