Lonely Planet review

This laid-back hostel near the Old Port is like a muesli bar in designer wrapping. It has 48 beds in pastel and orange dorms, over two nicely kept floors in a converted commercial space, with one private double room for around C$55. Organic breakfast costs around C$4, and you can use the cooking facilities.

Purged of many modern inventions such as televisions sets or vending machines, the hostel is instead stocked with local, eco-sensible products in keeping with their 'alternative' philosophy. Facilities that are available include locker rental, free high-speed Internet access and a shared kitchen that is well equipped and impeccably clean. Under each of the 48 beds a handy locker is stowed, and four private double rooms are a steal at C$55.00. Organic breakfast is cheap, or included if you have a private room, and fair-trade coffee is free all day long. The laid-back lounge is bedecked with red hues and artwork by local artist Raymond-Paul Martin. Reception is on the second floor - be prepared to take a few flights of stairs to your room.
