Don't let the sterile lobby and clunky elevators deter you, rooms at the YMCA are not only clean and modern, but reasonably priced - and open to men and women. Rooms without en suite rooms are slightly cheaper and more plentiful so if you need privacy, book ahead.

It's hard to beat the location, just one block south of Ste Catherine at the foot of trendy Rue Crescent. An added bonus for female travellers is free access to the 19m (62ft) indoor pool, and the weights and cardio machines in the fitness centre (open until 21:00 on weekdays, 17:00 on the weekend). Self-catering is possible in the communal dining room, where you've got access to a toaster, kettle, microwave and fridge. Groups of at least five can bring their sleeping bags and stay in dorms for next to nothing, but with a catch: no air-con. Students and seniors get a discount on room rates if they have valid identification. Although the YMCA does not have private parking, it's easy to find an overnight lot in the neighbourhood - budget for approximately C$15.00 a day.
