Lonely Planet review

If you don't mind the crush, nowhere in central Split offers cheaper beds than this two-dorm house hostel. It's friendly, down-to-earth and just two minutes' walk from the Roman ramparts of Diocletian's Palace.

From outside there's little to hint that this quaintly historic two-storey stone house is one of Split's backpacker bastions. It's certainly a far cry from the bland institutionalism of many bigger hostels. But the two jammed-full dorms are barely big enough for their six bunks apiece. And there can be quite a competition for the two small shower-toilet bathrooms. Two en suite three-bed dorms fly off the reservation list like hotcakes, so book these in advance. Nonetheless the hot water lasts reasonably long, there's air-conditioning, a hotplate, shared fridge, washing machine (if you can work its dodgy door!) and free fast internet from a single computer that doubles as the highly informal reception desk. It's all a little chaotic but resolutely popular with budget travellers.
