In an Art Deco building on a quiet street, the Mayfair got a redo in 2006, making it one of the better-value places in the neighbourhood – especially when you're relaxing on the large terrace. Solo travellers will find the single rooms cramped, however, and the young staff perfectly nice but perhaps a tad too attentive. Generous balconies, TVs, fridges and nice wood floors are a plus in the larger rooms.

This clean and well-maintained hotel (actually more of a hostel) is run by friendly Canadian management and the place welcomes a lot of North American, Australian and European backpackers. Many rooms have nice balconies overlooking a garden or the quiet, shady, tree-lined streets of Zamalek's embassy area. The long, wide terrace, overlooking the lush grounds of the French embassy, is ideal for some cooling beers after a hot day hoofing it around Cairo.
