Lonely Planet review

A 10-minute tram ride from town, this HI hostel is actually part of the Olympic Stadium that was built for the 1952 Summer Games. Initially it's a thrill to sleep where Olympians sacked down, but none of the rooms overlook the stadium and the building has a slightly institutional feel.

The decor of the hostel feels more than a little tired, and features like shared showers won't particularly endear it to all guests. The old style dorms sleep 12, although there is plenty of table and floor space. There is an adequate kitchen and laundry, an attractive dining room (as well as an attached cafe) and TV lounges. Other facilities include free parking, free internet, luggage storage and the convenient swimming centre, with pool, gym, and saunas. Add books and board games and the hostel becomes more or less what you make of it. The price remains the most attractive feature.
