Perched up on a rise above the harbour, overlooking the imposing Venetian fortress, the Lato Hotel enjoys the best views in Iraklio. It's a friendly, non-pretentious family-run place that was refurbished into a smart boutique hotel.Crete's capital is still undergoing a major facelift, but is slowly becoming a more appealing and interesting stop for travellers. The Lato's refurbishment is not high design but the city-style hotel is contemporary and comfortable, with leather couches, hide rugs and marble floors. The new swanky and spacious suites have decadent bathrooms with spa baths and large balconies facing the sea. The standard rooms are comfortable and stylish and most have sea views. Service is quick, friendly and efficient. There's high speed internet access and a small spa and mini-gym downstairs. The breakfast buffet is fairly standard but the roof garden bar and restaurant are excellent and enjoy superb panoramic views. The Lato is popular with business and leisure travellers.
