These utterly delightful self-contained villas are THE place to come for a touch of Santorini authenticity in Oia. It's a spot that will appeal especially to those who appreciate a good book or conversation rather than satellite TV or poolside tanning. Not that it's not luxurious - it is, but in a restrained, traditional way.

Chelidonia consists of nine beautifully renovated traditional houses dug into the cliff below the main street. They are spread over quite a large area and come in various shapes and sizes, but all are enchanting, boast very large modern bathrooms, an equipped kitchenette, and gorgeous dark-wood furniture. They all have a selection of books to browse and comfortable beds on Cycladic whitewashed bases. Like all old caldera-side homes, these rooms are essentially caves, and have a delightfully cool, grotto-like feel. All have a private terrace with, of course, breathtaking caldera views. There's even wireless Internet access. But the most enjoyable aspect of your stay (usually a three night minimum) is that, by the time you leave, your love-of-life-filled hosts are likely to feel like friends - it's no wonder that people return year after year. This is island hospitality at its best.
