Lonely Planet review

A perennial favourite is this funky house with a mix of rooms, both en suite and sharing. The decor is strictly late '70s to early '80s - lots of flower patterns and crazy colour schemes - but it's all part of the welcoming, off-beat atmosphere.

The Aachen is a terrific option precisely because it has retained that intimate familiarity associated with a family-run, smaller establishment. Indeed, this warm and friendly place has more the feel of a seaside B&B than a big-city hotel, and it is all the better for it. The 17 rooms vary in type and style - some are slightly more old-fashioned (and, dare we say it, a little bedraggled) than others - but each is comfortable and very clean. In this day of sleek lines and flat, monotonous colours, a little chintz certainly doesn't go amiss. The breakfast is filling and excellent, the owners friendly and the guest-only bar a decent spot for a chat and a pint. Don't expect much except for a friendly welcome, a warm bed and a terrific location, close to the city centre.
