A rambling place spread across a terrace of Georgian houses close to the Metropolitan Cathedral; narrow corridors lead to a variety of different rooms, but each is uniformly comfortable if ranging wildly in size.As mid-range options go, this is about as good a hotel as you'll find in such a central location. Room size is a key factor in determining experience; some of the doubles are much bigger than others and the top-floor singles are barely bigger than a postage stamp. Size aside, the rooms are all pretty comfortable: each comes with full-package satellite TV (a nice touch) and a clean bathroom. The all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast is a welcome morning treat, while the staff are incredibly helpful and friendly, always on hand to help out with a query. One minor caveat is that the hotel is incredibly popular with stag and hen weekends, which increases your chances of having your sleep disrupted by a gang of party folk screeching through the corridors in the wee hours. Bring the ear plugs.

The Albert Dock is your one-stop shop for fun and frolics: hit the water with a Yellow Duckmarine tour, followed by a visit to the Beatles Story - if you need a bit of high culture you can always hum and haw at the modern art in the Tate.
