Luxurious Liverpool's pre-eminent flag-waver is this stunning boutique hotel on the city's most elegant street. The building's original features - heavy wooden beams, cast-iron columns and plenty of exposed brickwork - have been incorporated into a contemporary design inspired by the style of a 16th-century Venetian palazzo.

This multi-award-winning hotel has earned nothing but high praise since it opened. Services are being constantly updated and there are plans for the addition of 30 more rooms in the adjacent building, all of which will be decorated in the supremely handsome style that has made the main building such a roaring success. King-sized beds draped in Egyptian cotton, oak floors with under-floor heating, LCD wide-screen TVs (with DVD players) and sleek modern bathrooms replete with a range of REN bath and beauty products are but the most obvious touches of class at this supremely cool address. You doubt us? Just ask Condoleeza Rice, who stayed here in 2005, or if you can't reach her, hang about the lobby for a bit and someone you recognize from a magazine or the football pitch will undoubtedly saunter in. Breakfast, taken in the marvellous London Carriage Works, is not included.
