When you roll into town on the train or bus, the first hostel you'll see is this one, located right next door in a 1930s former pub directly overlooking Eyre Square. It's run by the same owners and managers that recently acquired Kinlay House.

The mid-size Galway City Hostel (77 beds all up) is getting the finishing touches to a complete overhaul that has seen it fitted out with comfy new mattresses on all-new bunks with lock-up wire baskets underneath, new duvets, new bedspreads and fully renovated bathrooms. Some dorms are spacious, but others are sardine-can small. There's a kitchen equipped with a whopping industrial toaster and big hot water urn, opening onto a dining room with a TV and coin-op Internet, and there's a cool little balcony that's also sardine-like in summer. Even reception's up a flight of slate-tiled stairs, so there's no wheelchair access.
