Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Excellently positioned near Rittenhouse Square, this charming B&B packs heaps of old-world charm into its four storeys. This means your ceiling will be tall, your bathroom will often (but not always) be shared and your fellow guests will probably not be business travellers.

This lovely 1850s row house sits on a quiet stretch of Pine Street a few blocks south of Rittenhouse Square. The B&B's seven rooms come stocked with well-worn charm - often in the form of faded oriental rugs, plush draperies, tall ceilings, inoperative fireplaces and (it seems) the fragile furniture of a minor 19th-century French aristocrat. Because the interior feels a bit Second Empire and because most guests (frequently Europeans, academics and members of the culture class) would rather get their kicks by playing the parlour's Steinway than watching its flat screen TV (recently installed and horribly out of character), the place toes the line between stuffy and casual. Ultimately, the latter wins. Expect good breakfast (on china), free wi-fi, no parking lot and added comfiness thanks to a recent renovation.

Author Tip

Though this B&B is in the midst of a residential neighbourhood, you're a short walk from many attractions. Rittenhouse Square, two blocks' north, provides opportunity to enjoy Philadelphia's finest 19th-century urban garden. The square also serves as the focal point of the city's trendiest neighbourhood. For a cosy dinner away from the crowds, check out Astral Plane, just to the south.
