Lonely Planet Review
Looming above street level like an anthology of glued together beach cabanas, these studio apartments advertise themselves as no-frills. But they're fun, fresh, and easily the best value for your dollar in Cairns.
Bright cerulean hues drench the exteriors and inside natural light bounces off polished floors and pristine white walls. Each of the 35 apartments is large enough to accommodate a small troupe, but bedding configurations sleep a maximum of three. An elegant sufficiency of everything is provided; a king-size bed or two singles, neat kitchenette, couch, phone and large TV with cable channels. Splashes of colour lift the opalescent surfaces and hospital-strength cleanliness pervades. Thirty minutes of free internet is an added bonus for every guest, as is the secure carpark, pool and BBQ. There are also specially fitted wheelchair-accessible rooms and management is genuine and friendly. It's best suited to couples or duos, who arrive in every age and nationality. Bookings are strongly advised.

Author Tip
Around the corner on Shields St is the quaint and quirky Cairns Museum. Filled with relics of the region's past, it's a good place to dose up on the local history. If you're suffering a little tourist exhaustion, conveniently placed across the road from Shooting Star Apartments are the Cairns Central Cinemas, where you can indulge in a lazy bout of entertainment.
