Address: 3 ruelle des ursulines, Old upper town , Quebec city G1R 3Y6, Canada Show on map
Sitting on a tranquil, dead-end lane and covered in bright awnings and flowers, this place is a little burst of fire-engine red amongst the grey buildings of the Old Town. The hotel practically beckons you in.There's 16 plain, clean rooms, priced by size, and each has a private bathroom. Some are in the main building, others are accessed from the outside, and still others are across the lane in an annexe with air-conditioning. Rooms are sometimes quite sparse and simply decorated, however, all are comfortable and wonderful value. Staff here don't like unregistered visitors in the rooms no matter the time of day, so you're probably better to meet your friends outside unless you want an unexpected knock at the door. A simple continental breakfast is available for an extra charge.

Walk the fortifications surrounding the city. Head to Artillery Park at Porte St Jean to explore the old garrison buildings alternately used by the French and British armies. Head west on Rue St Jean for some interesting shopping and a look at Québec City outside the walls or have a meal at the terrific Le Commensal vegetarian restaurant.
