The archdiocese of the Lithuanian Catholic Church, owners of the stupendously valued, booze-free Kauno Arkivyskupijos Sveciu Namai, have done it again with this simpler and - believe it or not - cheaper sister version. Quick, somebody tell these people to open more guest houses all over Eastern Europe!

Well situated in the middle of Old Town, it's set up kind of like a hostel, with three bathrooms and three showers servicing 30 beds. All the rooms are doubles or triples; solo travellers must shell out full price for a double room. The rooms are slightly run-down, but only slightly and the bright bedspreads add a splash of colour (but beware of the room with the frilly blue bedspread, possibly the ugliest blanket in Lithuania). Floors are a distinctive mauve laminate - ugly but functional. There's also one massive 'deluxe' triple in the back with bold '70s furniture that would be a great place for a party if they allowed alcohol. Use of the kitchen costs a small fee for groups of up to six people. Towels are provided but bring your own soap. There's no parking. The staff speak German but not English.
