Shabby-chic Sammy delivers the best backpacker deal in town, with super-friendly service, Spanish lessons and an official hostel housecat to welcome you. Named for a dear departed pet, Hostal de Sammy is the kind of place many cheap backpacker digs can only dream of emulating. This clumsy rambler emanates a goofy and relaxed vibe. The whole 1st floor is common space, with extras like a pool table and backyard patio. Techie toys include a TV with DVD and video games and a room full of computer terminals for unlimited surfing. Bathrooms are ample and clean if a bit worn. Singles are spacious, but shared dorms (with metal lockers) feel a little frayed and smell slightly of mildew (or is that someone's socks?). But there's no need to stink, since washer and dryer use is complimentary. The hostel is staffed by 'freeloader' volunteers - mostly other travelers. English is spoken and guests are an eclectic mix of backpackers and students. It's located in the affordable university neighborhood, where you can eek by on low-cost meals (hot dogs and sopapillas - deep fried bread) and cheap pitchers of beer.
