So opulent it drives even the fussiest critic to bashful compliments, this revamped, five-star extravaganza holds pride of place on the Pier Marina and offers some of the finest accommodation in Queensland. Not a penny has been spared on the decadent makeover and the rooms are a destination unto themselves.

The cavernous lobby embodies a futuristic airport lounge, complete with sueded couches, feature lighting (crystal is soooo yesterday) and water features. Perennially smiling staff dispel any aloof tones and flip flops and Jimmy Choos are treated with equal measures of grace and respect. The Shangri-La's version of 'run-of-the-mill' is the 'Deluxe Room', fitted with contemporary colours, linen, furniture and lighting, all fit for a Soho showroom. The interiors are sublime, but they pale in comparison to the uninterrupted views of the marina from the generous private balconies. The 'Horizon Club' rooms are in another league altogether. Encompassing far too much space for two people and spa baths with a view, they also grant access to the exclusive Horizon Club floor with an elite dining room, and free drinks and canapés every afternoon. Possibly the cheapest means to feel like a celebrity.
