Recently refurbished and bursting with comforts, this big, old, Caribbean-style hotel (curiously named after a river in the Petén region of Guatemala) fills a yawning gap in Belize City's mid-range accommodation scene.

Rooms here (except for the very cheapest, fan-cooled ones) are bright and airy, catching plenty of sunshine. All are spacious and well-appointed, with cool floor tiles and enough furniture to make your stay a comfortable one. The wide shared balconies out the front of the rooms have comfortable wooden furniture. The hotel doesn't front the sea, but from some spots on the balcony you can catch glimpses of the water over the surrounding buildings. This place attracts archaeologists, wildlife lovers and writers, so striking up a conversation with your fellow guests could end up being one of the most interesting things you do here.
