Lonely Planet Review

Fun and funky, cool and retro. Mod polka dots to Zen simplicity - rooms here are uniquely unique. Sure Austin's infamous rockers stay at this eclectic motel. But so do all those seeking a non-standard, true-Austin experience. Book well ahead. The same family has owned Austin Motel since the 1960s - and only one family owned it prior to that from when it opened as a motor court in 1938. Most small singles, in the original one-story building feel like a guest room in grandma's house - pastel walls and pick-and-mix furnishings. (Does the local thrift shop have anything left?) Uphill in the two-story, 1960s edition, rooms are even more quirky. You may find yourself sleeping next to a full-wall mural of a Hawaiian beach or the open sky. Or there may be more of a theme, like the psychedelic 60s 'scape. Large patio rooms are some of the best, opening to the kidney-shape pool. Any property this age requires maintenance, and there is a certainly a degree of shabbiness to all this chic. Some guests have been put off by the staff's cool Austin attitude, but when it counts, they'll help all they can.
