Lonely Planet Review
Maui's top budget accommodation, this aptly named place spreads across 8090 sq m (2 acres) in the quiet upcountry hamlet of Hali'imaile. The rooms are simple but comfy and the shared amenities are generous; there's even a hot tub to relax in after a day's outing.
It's off by itself and next to nowhere, but the price is right and if you're planning to explore the entire island it's actually pretty central. Rooms are painted in cheery lime and lemon tones. Some have a tropical flower print hanging from the wall but that's it for the decor. All have a halfsize refrigerator, fan and TV. Bathrooms, clean and adequate in number, are shared. A well-equipped guest kitchen and a living room with a free Internet computer and wi-fi top off the amenities. The helpful owners live on the 2nd floor. If you prefer to have your own space, book the adjacent cottage; it's large enough to sleep a family and has lots of appealing touches, including a lanai with views across rolling pineapple fields out to the ocean.

Author Tip
Treat yourself to a dinner at nearby Hali'imaile Cafe; the village's sole eatery is so good people drive right across the island to dine there. Two miles to the south, the town of Makawao is fun for a prowl, with its curious mix of cowboy and New Age influences and good nightlife.
